Lost and Broken Dreams — A Visit from the Holy Spirit

There are moments in life when our dreams feel shattered, our purpose feels distant, and our hearts feel worn down by disappointment.
Recently, while sitting quietly under a tree beside a little brook, I had a profound encounter that spoke deeply into this very reality.

As I sat in stillness, the Holy Spirit came walking toward me. In His hand was a feather duster—soft, blue feathers shimmering in the light. As He moved past the trees, the field, the flowers, and even the rocks, He gently brushed over each one. Wherever the feathers touched, things began to sparkle with renewed life.
Then He brought my attention to something specific:
A small bird in a cage.
This little bird had once flown freely. It could sit in any tree, soar far and near, and explore the world with confidence and joy. But now, it sat confined in a very small cage. As the Holy Spirit revealed the story behind it, I understood:
The bird had entered the cage looking for safety, provision, and companionship.
It sought a place where food came easily, where life felt predictable, and where comfort seemed guaranteed. But in choosing what looked like security, the bird lost its freedom, dreams, and sense of purpose.
What struck me most was this:
As the bird realised what it had traded, its blue feathers started to fall out—one by one.
And each time a feather fell, the Holy Spirit picked it up and kept it.

At that moment I felt the conviction and compassion of the Lord.
We humans often do the same.
We chase the wrong 'kinds' of safety.
We settle for false provision.
We cling to relationships, routines, or environments that promise comfort but slowly steal our dreams.
Little by little, without even noticing, we can lose the “blue feathers” of who God created us to be.
We lose passion.
We lose hope.
We lose the vision God once placed in our hearts.
And eventually, we settle for a fraction of the life we were meant to live.
But here is the redeeming truth the Holy Spirit showed me:
It is not all lost.
God is our Redeemer.
He sees every broken dream.
He gathers every tear in His bottle.
He holds every lost feather—every piece of what we thought we threw away or destroyed.
As the Holy Spirit showed me what He does with those fallen feathers, hope rose within me.
He restores!
He rebuilds!
He resurrects1
No matter the mistakes we’ve made or the wrong paths we’ve chosen…
No matter how long we have lived outside His will…
He has been watching over us the whole time.
And if we place our lives in His hands again—if we let Him be Lord—He will show us what to do next.
He will redeem what was broken.
He will breathe life into what seemed dead.
He will lead us back into the fullness of our calling.
Because He is the Miracle Worker after all.
Closing Prayer for Restoration
Holy Spirit, I give You my broken dreams and the parts of my life that feel lost. Restore what was stolen, heal what was wounded, and breathe life into my purpose again. I trust You to redeem every piece. Amen.
